Marble & Granite Sculpting Workshop with Silvio Apponyi
Weekend of 7-8 September 2024
Exceptional opportunity to be introduced to carving the hard stones of granite and marble by master stone sculptor Silvio Apponyi at his Balhannah studio.
Instruction will take you from stone selection, bulk stone removal to forming and finishing techniques.
You will learn to safely:

Drill & split stone to the size you need using pins and wedges
-
Flat cut a surface - useful for creating a base for a sculpture
-
Shape at various scales, from bulk stone removal to fine details
-
Polish, texture and seal
Tools to be used include:
-
Powered 5 & 9 inch angle grinders (9 inch is optional)
-
Air hammer, chisels and die grinders using compressed air with various burrs and bits

Hand tools: point & flat chisels, mallets
-
Wet sander / polisher with diamond pads

Sun 8 September 9am-5pm

Nine day hard stone sculpture symposium at Crystal Lake Park, Macclesfield, as part of the Creative Pursuits Festival.
SA Stone Sculptors Assoc. members

will be carving hard stone artworks on site. Commissioning opportunities are for sculptures are still available.

Free form limestone carving workshop
1-4pm 28 April 2024
This workshop is suitable for beginners and starts with an introduction to hand tool use and stone safety instruction. You'll be shown how to approach bas relief and sculpting in 3 dimensions.
Then feel free to carve the stone in relief, 3-dimensions or maybe just surface textures... any way you like it!
If both Sunday sessions Introduction to 3D stone carving and Free form are booked, larger blocks can be selected and sculpted over the full day.
Classes are suitable for teens, beginners, intermediate and those with advanced skills wanting to sculpt a new material or wishing to sculpt in a group setting.
Ages
15+ (Children 10+years can attend with a participating adult)
Soft stone carving workshops with hand tools use naturally quarried Mt Gambier limestone. An excellent fit for beginners exploring the process of sculpting in stone, as it is soft and mostly even textured and safe to use.

During the Macclesfield Creative Pursuits Art Festival, 9 SASSA sculptors are on site carving hard stone sculptures over 9 days including stone lettering.
Sculptors are carving granite, marble and dolomite with angle grinders, air hammers and traditional hammers and chisels too...
Yes, it might be a bit noisy... and a bit dusty...and a lot of fun!
Commissioning opportunities are still available if you would like a SASSA sculptor to create a piece for you or your business at the Mini-Symposium!
Introduction to soft stone sculpting workshops are also being held on the first weekend. including an Introduction to Tools and Techniques for Carving Soft Stone are being held on Sat 27 and Sun 28 April.

Introduction to hand tools for stone carving
9am -12pm 27 April 2024
If you’ve never use hand tools or never used them on soft stone, then this is the workshop for you!
Step by step guidance in the safe use of each sculpting tool from saws, hammers and chisels, through to rasps, files and sand paper, will provide the foundation for sculpting soft Mt Gambier limestone.
Exploration is through mark and pattern making on small blocks which can later be adapted to use as candle holders or drilled to create garden cairn stacks if you’d like.
Classes are suitable for teens, beginners, intermediate and those with advanced skills wanting to sculpt a new material or wishing to sculpt in a group setting.

Introduction to relief carving in soft stone
1 - 4pm 27 April 2024
Simple designs or illustrations will be drawn onto the flat stone surface, and we have designs if you'd like to use them.
The depth of carving for your design can be very shallow for a low relief sculpture or if the background level is deeper you will have a high relief sculpture. Any way you like it!
Mt Gambier limestone is a soft and smooth stone and little pressure is required to shape it.
Workshop begins with tool and stone safety instruction.
Classes are suitable for teens, beginners, intermediate and those with advanced skills wanting to sculpt a new material or wishing to sculpt in a group setting.

You’ll be guided in selecting a suitable form, marking up the stone for cutting, efficient removal of stone and finishing techniques.
Mt Gambier Limestone blocks of various shapes will be available for carving. You might bring an object or an idea, or just enjoy the process and carve away!

Stone Letter Carving Workshops
16-19 April 2024
An introduction to letter carving in stone with instructors Greg Hanlon and Evan Marker. A four day workshop from 16-19 April, held at Adelaide Central School of Art.
Introducing the ancient craft of carving stone inscriptions by hand. Using hand tools only you will learn to carve letters in the same way it has been done by craftspeople for thousands of years.

Learn the details of drawing Roman Capital letters which are considered the classic form of letters and are the basis for most signwriting and script design.

Design a simple script. One word or some initials, and learn techniques for transferring your design to the stone face.

Using only a small mallet and fine lettering chisels learn how to carve crisp, vibrant, beautiful letter forms into the stone.
For The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as anyone with some experience. A bit of research beforehand for beginners would be advised. Simple search Letter Carving in Stone on-line.
